Where are tournaments?
Tournament sites are usually High School or College gyms throughout North Carolina. The Region determines, for a particular weekend, the host location for each age group. Regional tournaments are always on Saturday and start at 9AM. Teams compete in a pool play format, playing at least 3-4 matches ending around 2PM. Pending the results, the top teams compete in a tournament bracket concluding around 7PM. Usually the field of teams is limited to 1 age division and 12-15 teams. All officiating is conducted by players. Average travel time is 1.5-2 hours.
Regional teams may also venture to South Carolina to play in their regional events. These are sometimes a shorter driving distance for an age divison on a particular weekend and give the team a different group of teams to compete against that day. Usually a regional team will play a couple longer weekend tournaments.
Travel teams will compete in region and regularly compete in larger, multi-region tournaments that span the weekend and sometimes holiday weekends. For example, the Shamrock Festival is a 2-day tournament held in Roanoke, Virginia in which teams play 2 round of pool play on Saturday for seeding and then the brackets are formed for Sunday’s single elimination tournament. At many of these tournaments, paid officials are provided. All age groups play in 1 arena, bringing in 20-30 teams per age group. Average travel time is 3-6 hours.
Travel teams may also compete in a National Qualifier which is run by USAV. These 3-day tournaments are held in large Convention Centers and have teams from across the country, averaging a field of 100-150 teams per age group. The Big South Qualifier is the closes national event held in Atlanta's World Congress Center.
