Players will meet in the gym for initial workout with coaches.
SEASON SCHEDULE
*Some of these practices may be held at Mallard Creek Pals a Roo (or another site)
*These scrimmages may take the place of one of our weekly practices.
OVERALL OBJECTIVES
1. Divide players in squads of comparable playing skill level (8-10 players in each squad)
2. Concentrate on basic playing skills (serving, passing, setting, hitting, blocking), court movement (transition to free ball, ready position, attack, coverage); rotation positions (switches on serve); attack strategies (rudiments of 4-2; 5-1 and 6-2 offences) and defensive rotations. Normally half of practice time will be devoted to skill development and half to team play.
3. Begin general specialization (Setters, Middle/Outside hitters, Defensive specialist, etc.)
4. Prepare each player for school tryouts.
5. Instill a life-long love of VB!
COACHING STRATEGIES
1. While each coach will prepare his/her own practice schedule for each session, our coaches will be literally on the same page by using the book published by the American Sports Education Program, Coaching Youth Volleyball, as the basic guide for our instruction.
2. Coaches will share their specialties by occasionally rotating among squads or working together when two squads are practicing at the same time.
3. Each practice will give time to the basic skills: passing; setting, hitting, serving, blocking, plus team play.
4. While each practice will be tailored for the particular age group, all the squads will be introduced to new skills at the same time; for example, on the same day, all coaches will introduce jump setting or off-hand tipping.
